Makenna Zur Schmiede
Makenna fell in love with yoga when she was 17 years old. She was drawn to the practice for the physical benefits but what kept her coming back was the undeniable feeling of peace and spiritual connection that, at the time, she didn’t even know she was searching for. After becoming more seasoned in her practice, she decided that teaching yoga was something she wanted to pursue. So, in 2018, she earned her 200-hr RYT from Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in NYC, where she also began her teaching career. Makenna completed her 200-hr teacher training after graduating with a BFA in Acting from Purchase College, SUNY.
In 2015, Makenna helped co-found Bala Shala Yoga for Kids with Staci Bina and has been helping teach and organize the Bala Shala Summer Kids Camp ever since. After a year with Bala Shala, she became certified to teach children’s yoga through Karma Kids Yoga in 2016. Because of her acting training, her yoga classes for kids heavily emphasize imagination and adventure.
Her approach to yoga prioritizes creating a safe space for her students. Before anything else, she aims to facilitate a space that makes students feel like the little muscle strands around their skull and their brain can relax, so they can peacefully observe their minds and bodies. Her secondary objective is to honor a “bigger-than-self” connection. This involves checking in with her students and asking questions like, “what do you want to work on?” or “why did you choose to come to class today?” so that their intentions and priorities are with them throughout their practice. Her third objective is guiding the body towards greater health and well-being. Some focuses she loves to include in her classes include the Chakras, Ayurveda, Beathwork and of course, to crack some smiles.
